Commander’s Message February 2025
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day which predicts 6 more weeks of winter. Good news for skiers, bad news for those of us who are looking forward to those warmer days of spring and
summer. However, when it comes to the Groundhog predicting an early Spring. Over the years, Phil has only been right about 1/3 of the time. Still better than the Lottery though. As we continue to navigate
the roads and sidewalks during the next couple of months, be prepared for icy roads and sidewalks.
As of January 31st, our Post has 151 paid members. Rob Boysen, Membership Chairman, and his team, have attempted to contact those members who still haven’t paid their 2025 membership fee. Last year
Post 440 achieved 100% membership compliance. This year, we are only at about 88%. If you still are an unpaid member, please pay your dues. The easiest way is to pay the American Legion on line. If you
have questions or are having problems paying your 2025 dues, please contact Rob directly. Rob's cell: 267-278-0827 Email: [email protected].
Post 440 now has a Sons Of the Legion Squadron. The Squadron was granted official status by American Legion National in January. The SOL currently has 20 members and is continuing to recruit additional
members.
For this year’s American Legion Essay Scholarship Contest, Post 440 had 4 candidates who submitted essays. Contestants represented Council Rock South High School and Council Rock North High School. Lucy Mills, (Post 440 Member Brian Mills’ Granddaughter), who attends Council Rock North High School was selected to advance to the next round of the competition. Post 440 will provide all other Essay Scholarship candidates with a participation recognition reward.
We have begun the planning for this year’s American Legion Post 440, Newtown Memorial Day Parade. Kyle Davis is guiding the effort, but we need many volunteers to assist in the activities to help make it the
great success it has been in years past. Please let me know if you are available to march in the parade, walk in the parade in uniform, or ride on the float or assist in logistics. Memorial Day this year is Monday, May 26th.
Charlie Keller, a long time Post 440 Legionnaire passed away January 31, 2025. Services will be held on Saturday February 8th from 2 to 4 PM at Schwartz Funeral Home in Newtown, followed by a reception at
American Legion Post 440, Newtown afterwards. Brian Mills’ son Adam is recovering from heart surgery. Please keep Adam in your thoughts and prayers.
Our next General Membership Meeting is Tuesday, February 18, 2024, at 7:30 pm. We will begin the meeting downstairs and then move upstairs for the dinner. I look forward to your attendance.
